Pakatua Island, also known as Pakatoa Island, is a 24.0787‑hectare freehold island positioned in the Hauraki Gulf, approximately 40 km from downtown Auckland. Featuring three private beaches, open grassland, and a diverse mix of native, pine, and palm trees, the island offers significant redevelopment potential or the opportunity to retain a private coastal retreat near Waiheke and Coromandel.
The Property
The island includes a range of existing resort buildings and facilities that require refurbishment or demolition. Structures in the northern area include a restaurant, coffee bar, takeaway food facilities, tourist bar, lounge areas, kitchen facilities, entertainment and conference centre, reception, offices, shop, and a swimming pool. Staff amenities, maintenance buildings, and general storage structures are also present.
Guest accommodation consists of 24 beachside cabins and 38 two‑ to three‑bedroom units constructed using Lockwood timber framing, known for natural timber interiors. These units are fully self‑contained and positioned on elevated slopes with wide views.
The Land and Water
The island spans approximately 60 acres and features three private beaches, sheltered coves, and a mix of open grassland and elevated terrain. Buildings are concentrated in the lower northern area, while chalets occupy higher ground. The southern half of the island is predominantly open grassland.
Access and Utilities
Marine access is provided by a substantial wharf jetty, and the island is serviced by a sealed internal road system. Power is supplied by a recently installed solar system with two older diesel generators as backup. Fresh water comes from four underground bores and rainwater collection stored in large tanks. A sewage treatment plant and drainage system have been constructed to specification for the island’s previous operational scale.
The Lifestyle
Formerly operating as Pakatoa Island Resort, the island served as a holiday and business conference destination before becoming a private retreat for the current owner. With renovation, the property could be repositioned as a resort, corporate retreat, or private family haven. Recreational amenities include beaches, a swimming pool, golf course, two mini tennis courts, a bowling green, squash court, gymnasium, and solarium. A resident caretaker currently oversees the property.
