Overview

Spectacle Island Estate rests between Bar Harbour and Winter Harbour, Maine, in a body of water called Frenchman's Bay. Nestled in an alcove of smaller islands, Spectacle Island is protected from the south weather by Turtle Island, owned by the Nature Conservancy, and Mark Island, which used to house a working lighthouse. To the east, the Schoodic Peninsula blankets the horizon. To the north, you'll see Grindstone Neck with its spruce trees and nesting osprey. To the west, Flat Island and Heron Island are dwarfed by the rolling hills of Mount Desert Island.

Accommodations

The hand-carved Post and Beam home, finished in the summer of 2005, includes all modern household accoutrements. The island produces its own fresh water, power, and heat, thanks to new technology and fuel sources such as a generator, solar, batteries, inverters, desalinization machines, and propane. There are three bedrooms, two full baths, and a bunk house hanging over the beach:

• Master Suite: Views to the south, east, and west, with an attached bathroom, Jacuzzi tub, and glass-enclosed shower.

• East Bedroom: Two twin beds with views of the Schoodic Peninsula and Grindstone Neck.

• West Bedroom: Queen bed with views of Grindstone Neck, Heron Island, and Mount Desert Island.

• Bunk House: Overlooks the beach.

Amenities/Inclusions

• Kitchen: Fully equipped, can be provisioned to your liking or catered with a menu chosen up to a week in advance.

• Dining Room: Overlooks Frenchman's Bay and the mountains of Acadia National Park, perfect for viewing sunsets over Mount Desert Island.

• Living Room: Cozy and spacious, featuring a framed beach stone fireplace, ideal for curling up with a book or enjoying the company of loved ones.

Activities

• Outdoor Activities: Observing lobster fishermen, watching seagulls, osprey, and eagles, and enjoying the sea air and sun.

• Relaxation: Peaceful surroundings that allow your cares to drift away, offering a sense of freedom and space.

Transportation

Whether you choose to fly or drive, you will be picked up by your hosts in either Bar Harbor or Winter Harbor. There are two airports available:

• Bar Harbor Airport: Approximately a 30-minute drive.

• Bangor International Airport: Approximately a 1.5-hour drive.

During your stay on Spectacle Island, you have three transportation options:

1. Host as Licensed Captain: Your host, a licensed captain, will take you wherever you need to go on the Island Dream, a 36' custom lobster yacht.

2. Personal Boat: You may bring your own boat.

3. Boat Rental: Rent a boat at a nearby harbor, which can be arranged by your hosts at your expense.
